Dressed Herring Salad – Russia
The herring dressed, colloquially known as herring a fur coat (in Russian: Селёдка Под шубой, TR. Selyodka Pod Shuboy or simply Russian: Шуба, TR. Shuba), is a salad of Russian layers composed of herring marinated in cubes covered with layers of Vegetables boil potatoes, carrots, beets), chopped onion and mayonnaise. Some variations of this dish include a fresh grated apple layer, while others do not.
A final layer of grated baked beet topped with mayonnaise is what gives the salad its rich purple characteristic color. The dressed herring salad is often decorated with grated boiled eggs (whites, buds, or both).
Herring dressed salad is popular in Russia, Ukraine (Ukrainian: оселедець mouabelio шубою, translit. Oseledets PID Shuboyu), Belarus (Belarusian: Селядзеussia пад футрам, translit.
